A Health And Physical Education Instructor Instructs Her Students About The Critical Nature Of Alcohol Dependency Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most financially challenged co-ed high school in the local community. Although she had been teaching for only a few years, she had already gained a reputation as an educator with educational approaches that inspired and encouraged pupils to learn and to think.
As an illustration, one Tuesday afternoon she addressed the students in her classroom and said the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some typical alcoholism signs from a general perspective and we are also going to learn about several of the best known signs of alcoholism from a more detailed standpoint."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely substantiate that a drinker with a drinking problem is an alcoholic, but the more signs that a drinker exhibits, the greater the likelihood that she or he is an alcohol dependent individual."
Miss Jackson then told the class that each individual would be responsible for examining four alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the rest of the class by way of a seven minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked her students to go over the list and rank the top ten alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After approximately fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and explained to the pupils in her classroom that after she reviews the numbers, she will reveal her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson told her students to go over the numbers and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 10 or 20 seconds, almost every pupil in the classroom raised her or his hand. It was obvious that the students had some issues, questions, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For example, just about every student had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, to be exact, "Do you feel very ill when you abstain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told the pupils in her class why this answer was the most correct sign of alcohol dependency. She underlined the fact that the foremost difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
Essentially this means that when an alcoholic all of a sudden quits drinking, she or he will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the pupils started to understand the primary difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.
A few minutes later the bell rang, meaning that the end of class had arrived. Based on the excitement manifested by the pupils when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had stimulated and motivated her students to stop and think about a vital social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
