A Ninth Grade Male Student Drinks Excessively With His Pals, Almost Dies From Alcohol Poisoning, And Discovers That Learning Something In Class Can Change Your Life
Andy was a high school ninth grader who frequently seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had an adventurous personality and usually wanted to do what his older brothers were doing to have fun. The fundamental difficulty with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a result legally allowed to drive a truck or car and to consume alcohol.
Andy, however, had a difficult time comprehending the fact that as a fifteen-year-old young man he should not be drinking. In fact, conversely, Andy often drank with his friends after school, largely on the weekends.
One weekend, Andy was invited to drive around with some of his older friends. One of his buddies was old enough to buy alcohol. After buying some wine, beer, and wine coolers, Andy and all of his buddies went to a park and drank for approximately two or three hours.
After drinking more or less five bottles of beer, Andy started to feel queasy and then threw up. When he passed out on the outdoor basketball court, one of his guy friends called 911 for immediate medical assistance. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his buddies went to the hospital to see Andy, they found out that Andy had been going through alcohol poisoning symptoms. More specifically, Andy had experienced an alcohol overdose.
After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was quite amazed to realize that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had more or less five or ten drinks. When he explained this to the attending doctor at the hospital, then again, the physician informed Andy that drinking five or ten cans of beer over a two or three hour period of time could certainly be significantly more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The physician further emphasized how extreme amounts of alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person's breathing and that when this takes place, a person can perish.
This was the first word of warning to Andy that he was drinking in a hazardous manner and that there are ramifications for such actions. The physician told Andy that he was a fortunate young man because he almost died from alcohol poisoning the previous night.
The physician also talked to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol treatment for Andy. His parents were elated that Andy was all right and informed the physician that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol rehabilitation.
While conversing with his parents, Andy told them that there must be a good reason why he did not pass away and that he was grateful that he was still alive. He also told his parents that the odd part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning last week in Mr. Johnson's health class.
At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was saying didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Due to the fact that he almost passed away, on the other hand, he felt that he should have listened more attentively in class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.
Andy informed his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to Mr. Johnson's classroom and apologize to Mr. Johnson for not paying closer attention to a subject that was as pertinent as learning about alcohol poisoning.
