Abusive And Irresponsible Drinking Leads To Depression And Mental Health Issues, An Enabling Spouse, And Encouragement For Constructive Change
It took more than a few years but Sarah finally made up her mind that she had enough with her husband's abusive drinking. She was weary from seeing Keith come home in the early hours of the morning from drinking rather than spending time with the family. She was also sick and tired of the third DUI Keith recently received. Moreover she was tired of creating justifications for Keith when he couldn't show up for work on time due to his careless drinking.
In a similar manner, she was worried about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Keith's abusive and hazardous drinking. And finally she was weary from the uncertain financial jam into which he had put his family due to his excessive and abusive drinking behavior.
One Friday morning when Sarah was thinking about what she could do about her husband's abusive and hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she simply had to do something positive to cut into the destructive cycle of Keith's careless and excessive drinking behavior. So Sarah looked in the local yellow pages under "alcohol treatment" and discovered a number of treatment clinics that were all located less than 50 miles away from where Keith and she lived.
When Sarah called each rehabilitation clinic she introduced herself and stated that Keith, her spouse, was involved in abusive and hazardous drinking behavior. She also mentioned that her husband had a top-rate health insurance program at his job and that residential or outpatient alcohol treatment would be covered if a health care practitioner in the company health plan authorized the treatment.
After listening to Sarah describe her husband's excessive and hazardous drinking, the healthcare professional in a supportive but firm way told Sarah how she may have adding to her husband's abusive and hazardous drinking through the years. How? Primarily by covering for him rather than letting him experience the consequences of his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior.
In a word, the psychologist told Sarah that she may have been inadvertently enabling Keith's abusive drinking behavior. The therapist also underlined the point that Sarah could not control her husband's actions. With the support and guidance of the rehab team at the rehabilitation facility, however, she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Keith's careless and excessive drinking but she could also learn how to encourage him to make an appointment at the treatment center so that he could go over his abusive drinking behavior with a therapist.
The good news was that after Sarah revealed this to her husband and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been very troubled by his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior and that he was very relieved to hear that Sarah wanted to do something constructive about his careless and excessive drinking behavior. As a result, he made an appointment to see a therapist at the local alcohol treatment facility.
While simply calling a rehabilitation center does not ensure that a person's careless and excessive drinking behavior will stop or that a person will automatically be more open to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is evidently a crucial step in the treatment process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting therapy for his abusive drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was significantly increased.
