Tell your dog firmly that you want him to sit, then take your hand and place it on his back and gently guide his bottom down, when he is in the sitting position make a fuss of him by patting him, then give him a biscuit or what ever treats you have brought along to reward him with.
If you keep repeating this lesson, your dog will respond to the sit command, because he understands that by doing what he is told he will be rewarded and also because he can tell that you are pleased with him. Ultimately your dog will heed you as a matter of course, and the treats will no longer be necessary.
