Teen Alcohol Abuse, The Correlation Between Coping Skills And Abusive Drinking, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Education
Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol abuse consultants declare that wine, beer, and liquor ads generated by the media are a key reason for the increase in teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcohol abuse experts believe that the increase in youth alcohol abuse is due to the toleration and ease of access of liquor, beer, and wine in our society. Still other substance abuse experts believe that many of our young people engage in destructive drinking due to the increased anxiety that they face.
From a somewhat different viewpoint, due to the fact that both parents in many families work full or part-time, the lack of parental supervision without a doubt has to play a fundamental part in the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse. And lastly, various alcohol abuse professionals assert that the expansion of adolescent alcohol abuse is due, in some measure, to our lax society.
One facet of teenage alcohol abuse that seems to be lacking in the alcohol dependency research literature, to the contrary, is the insufficiency of educational programs that teach teens how to upgrade their coping skills so that their abusive and hazardous drinking behavior is significantly reduced or eradicated. Stated differently, scientific research has disclosed the fact that there is an indirect association between poor coping skills and hazardous and excessive drinking.
Fundamentally, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the higher the incidence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a correct allegation, why isn't coping skills instruction an essential part of the educational curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?
Let us create a scenario for illustrative purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are trained how to achieve superior coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets difficult, students who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a healthier and more productive way, as opposed to others who fail to apply their coping skills.
Stated more precisely, students who demonstrate high-quality coping skills will be more able to think proactively and display quality decision making as opposed to students who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to develop good coping skills, resort to the "quick fix" of unhealthy and excessive drinking.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, additionally, if teenagers not only received top quality coping skills training but also received an outstanding education that focused on the long term and short term destructive results associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Emphasizing these teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills training, it is asserted, would help teenagers avoid the noticeable appeal related to teen drinking and, accordingly, would substantially decrease the alcohol abuse exhibited by adolescents in our country.
There are surely a number of justifiable reasons why so many of our adolescents drink in a risky manner. Such a complicated problem demands a comprehensive and relevant response by our parents, politicians, students, and educators so that our teenagers can learn how to cope with life's predicaments in a more rewarding and responsible manner rather than resorting to hazardous drinking to solve their problems.
